Problem:  An audit at Grand Garden Medical Center found that 35% of medication errors were due to communication issues, particularly during shift-change handoffs, creating risks to patient safety and hospital liability.

Solution:  This virtual instructor-led training teaches nursing staff the SBAR communication tool and provides scenario-based practice to improve handoff communication. The training can also be delivered live using the same structured content and activities.

Training Approach:  This training was designed to be delivered virtually. However, this training can also be given in person with hard copies of the deliverables.

Highlights: The training uses case studies, patient scenarios, and breakout rooms to provide hands-on, scenario-based practice with the SBAR communication tool. Interactive discussions and guided debriefs help learners apply the tool effectively in real-world patient handoffs.

Tools Used: PowerPoint slides and a virtual platform such as Zoom, including breakout room and chat functionality 

The facilitator guide provides the full slide presentation order and titles, with detailed sections for each slide including thumbnails, talking points, and descriptions of animations. It includes pre-work and step-by-step directions for both the facilitator and producer throughout the training. Links to the presentation and all required materials are also provided to ensure smooth delivery of the session.

The participant guide is intended to be printed and used during the training. It includes discussion reflection questions, a case study activity on communication breakdowns, and the SBAR practice activity where groups of learners rewrite the patient handoff in breakout rooms. This guide encourages participation and can also serve as a reference when reviewing the key points and activities of the training. 

The participant quiz is printed and completed during the training, then submitted to the supervisor. It includes five multiple-choice questions and five short-answer questions based on a patient handoff scenario. The quiz is scored out of 22 points, with 80% required to pass, reinforcing the application of the SBAR communication tool.
